Moshi is a small and lively Tanzanian market town. It is the capital of the Kilimanjaro region. What makes Moshi so unique is the fact that it is hidden behind one of the world’s most beautiful scenery, the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro. No matter where you wander around in Moshi, the mountain is always within reach. The town is located at an altitude of 890m above sea level. Moshi is the kind of place where you can relax in a friendly atmosphere and it’s easy to get in contact with the locals. Spend a few days in Moshi and see what it has to offer.

The volcanic soils on the mountain slopes is very fertile allowing for coffee and bananas to thrive. Moshi is one of the two leading coffee producing towns in Tanzania and you will know this from the sweet smelling air coming from the main coffee processing factory. Three main tribal groups call Moshi home – The Chagga, Pare and Maasai. The Chagga are the dominant tribe in the town and surrounding villages. They are known for their hard work, business acumen and friendly nature. The Masai homesteads are further north and away from the town.

Most of the Masai in Moshi town are employed as watchmen or come to sell their traditional handcrafts and medicines. The main language spoken in the town is Swahili but you will find that most people on the street speak good English. Although Moshi is a coffee and sugar producing town, tourism is very important to the economy of the town. Most tourist who visit Moshi do so on their way to and from climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

Materuni waterfalls and coffee tour

Materuni is the home of the Chagga tribe and is still an authentic tribal village. This charming place is just 15km away from Moshi Town and is the last village before the Kilimanjaro National Park. You will be picked up in Moshi in the morning, by our English-speaking guide, who will drive you to Materuni Village. Upon arrival, you will register at the village office and your trip can begin.

First you will visit the waterfalls, which are around a 40 minute walk away. On the way, your guide will inform you about the culture of the Chagga, village life and explain the surrounding fauna and flora. The views are truly breathtaking, and with some luck you will see the summit of Kilimanjaro. When you reach the waterfalls, you will see that they are more than 80 meters high.

The pool at the bottom of the water-fall is an inviting place for a refreshing swim so don‘t forget your swimwear! After having enjoyed the scenery, you slowly return with your guide to Materuni village, where you will experience a traditional Chagga lunch. You also will have the opportunity to taste our local banana beer – definitely not to be missed!

But that’s not all. Next the coffee experience awaits you. Here you will learn how coffee is cultivated, dried, roasted and further processed. You will also be invited to help with the grinding of the coffee, which is traditionally accompanied by Chagga songs and dances – a fun way to immerse yourself in the local cul-ture. Before you say goodbye and return in the afternoon to Moshi, you can savour the coffee you made and appreciate the views of the surrounding rainforest.

Note: This tour can be booked from Moshi with private transport as well as by public transport (see prices). We recommend private transport, as public transport is often delayed and occasionally overfilled. The departure can also take place from another place (Arusha, Marangu, Kilimanjaro International Airport etc.), on request we will inform you on the price for the transport.

Forest cycle tour (Rau forest)

Why not visit the untouched beauty of the Rau forest. See local flora & fauna as you cycle through this old wooded region of Kilimanjaro. With your trusted local guide, speak to local community members and find out why this forest is of cultural significance for this local community.
Itinerary
At 0900hrs, we will ride through Tpc sugar cane plantation area with its small farms and houses. You’ll cycle past schools, mosques and churches. Your journey takes you to the nearby rice fields, where you’ll make a stop and if you wish can lend a helping hand to the field workers. Afterwards you will have a better understanding how much hard work goes into one sack of rice. Enriched with this intense experience we visit a local family for lunch. Rice is one of the main components of meals in Tanzania and you will have the chance to taste it at their house in a traditional meal called Pilau.
Get indulged by the hospitality of the local family while you sit at their veranda and share a meal and thoughts about life with them. All fueled, you continue the bike ride through the Rau Forest, a natural beauty just behind the city of Moshi. Watch out for colobus monkeys in the tree crowns with their long fluffy tails. As you cycle through this never-ending jungle, listen carefully to the animal sounds.
Our last stop of the day is at the old railway station, remains from the German colonial time. You will feel like you are on 1900s film set and can still sense the bustling energy this magical place used to have roughly hundred years ago. With a little bit of luck, you have the best view on Kilimanjaro while sipping a cold Kilimanjaro beer from the rail station bar, reflecting on today’s incredible adventure. Our guide will take you back to your accommodation, where you can stretch your legs and arms after a day on Tanzania’s rough roads.

Maasai Tour & Hot springs

Come with us and visit a real Maasai village. Unlike many other Maasai villages in the area, which have been built only for tourist purposes, Kambi ya Chooka is an authentic village founded by local Maasai.

We start early in the morning and are accompanied by our English-speaking guide. The road takes us through beautiful landscapes: African bushland where we see dried-up river beds, baobab and acacia trees and sugar cane plantations.

Once we arrive in the village, please remember to be a respectful guest and don‘t take pictures of the villagers without asking. During the visit you will have a chance to mingle with the Maasai and chat with them, but your social skills and creativity will determine how much they open up to you. Your English-speaking guide will assist you and translate into Kimaasai, as the Maasai themselves do not speak any other languages.

Whilst you walk through the village with your guide, you will learn more about the culture of the Maasai. This will include a lesson on traditional Maasai medicine and the opportunity to taste the local Maasai tea. We will also have the opportunity to visit a Maasai home.

In the early afternoon, we will leave the village and continue to the Kikuletwa Hot Springs, which are near the village of Rundugai. The Kikuletwa Hot Springs are certainly one of the most beautiful places in

Tanzania – the hot springs are surrounded by fig and palm trees and winding roots – a real hidden para-dise. The crystal clear, turquoise waters invite you for a refreshing swim. Although called a hot spring, water in Kikuletwa is not hot, but rather refreshing since the water source is from the Kilimanjaro moun-tain itself.

After enjoying a swim, we will have a picnic lunch. Once we have relaxed fully, we will return to Moshi in the late afternoon.

Arusha National Park

You will be picked up in the morning by our English-speaking guide at your hotel. Together, you will head to the entrance of Arusha National Park, the Ngongongare Gate. After the formalities are finished, the day’s adventure can start. Arusha National Park is one of the smaller parks of Tanzania and is a popular destination for day trips due to its proximity to Moshi and Arusha. Despite its size, the park offers a spectacular landscape and a di-verse wildlife population.

Giraffes, zebras, antelopes, buffalos, warthogs, baboons, colobus monkeys, blue monkeys and other animals can be seen all year round – as well as a large variety of bird species. With luck, you will also see leopards, elephants and hyenas. The park’s three most significant features include Mount Meru (Tanzania’s second highest peak at 4566m), the notably different coloured Momella Lakes, and the 3km wide Ngurdoto Crater, which was formed about fifteen million years ago. Because of its stunning beauty, many scenes of the Hollywood classic “Hatari” starring John Wayne and Hardy Krüger were filmed here.

First we will drive to the Momella Gate where an armed ranger will be waiting for you to accompany you on a walking safari. Here you will have the unique opportunity to observe the wild animals close up. Only a few other national parks in Tanzania give you such an opportunity and it is something that should not be missed. After thoroughly enjoying the walking safari, you will have lunch at a picnic spot with a wonderful view over the Momella lakes. In the afternoon you will continue with an exciting game drive, where you will see the Ngurdoto Crater and other places.

During the drive, your experienced guide will tell you every-thing you need to know about the park, the landscape and the animals. In the late afternoon, just before the park closes, your driver will escort you back to the hotel. On the way back, you can enjoy the sunset and your memories of the day.
